There is a book that is over two thousand years old
And it strongly aligns with how I think now.
The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
Sun Tzu writes that the greatest generals do not win by fighting harder.
They win by positioning themselves so well before the battle that the outcome is almost decided before anyone throws a punch.
The fight is just the confirmation.
I read that and thought about how I make decisions in my business.
Sometimes I scramble when a problems shows up.
I try to solve them under pressure with half the information and twice the stress.
So we changed something.
Now my co-founder and I sit down regularly and ask one question
What would make this decision easy before we are ever forced to make it ?
Sometimes the answer is information we should be gathering now, before we need it.
Sometimes it is a relationship we should be building now, before we need something from it.
Sometimes it is a plan we should be writing now, before the pressure arrives.
The decisions that feel hardest in the moment are almost always the ones that were never prepared for.
If you keep finding yourself under pressure, making important calls with no time and no clarity, the problem is rarely your ability to decide.
The problem is that the decision should have already been made.
Prepare earlier. Position better.
